Low-energy beacons are small radio transmitters that make objects digitally identifiable. They are attached to objects or built into devices and transmit a signal at regular intervals. This signal contains a unique identifier. Telematics gateways and smartphones with a beacon app installed can detect and relay this signal.
The range of a beacon tracking system depends on the device, the transmission power, the installation location, and the surrounding environment. In open areas, a beacon device typically has a longer range than inside buildings, where walls, doors, metal shelves, machinery, vehicles, and people can interfere with the signal.
