The Geiger Group

The Geiger Group represents a successful blend of tradition and innovation. Since its founding in 1923, the group, headquartered in Oberstdorf, has developed into a diverse corporate network with approximately 4,000 employees and around 100 locations in Germany and across Europe. Its services are based on the principle of the circular economy, which means: Geiger designs and builds, maintains and renovates, processes and recycles, all in the spirit of a closed-loop system. Since recycling is not yet possible everywhere, Geiger also collects and disposes of waste—but does so with the utmost reliability and a strong sense of responsibility.

The Geiger Group offers these services to numerous customers in the infrastructure, real estate, and environmental sectors from a single source. Regardless of its size and an annual turnover of around 850 million euros, the Geiger Group has remained true to its corporate philosophy of “long-term, independent success” to this day. Today, this tradition-conscious, medium-sized family business is successfully managed by the fourth generation.

The Challenge

Geiger Technik und Service GmbH & Co. KG, an independently operating unit within the Geiger Group, is responsible for the full spectrum of modern fleet services. The company manages, maintains, and rents out construction machinery, commercial vehicles, and passenger cars, thereby providing the technical foundation for numerous construction and infrastructure projects.

With a versatile fleet of several hundred large and small machines—including crawler excavators, wheel loaders, specialty machines, and a wide range of attachments and small equipment—Geiger Technik und Service GmbH & Co. KG is present daily at a wide variety of construction sites. The machines frequently switch between projects, creating a dynamic operating environment and placing the highest demands on transparency, planning reliability, and efficiency.

Precisely because the fleet consists of valuable, heavily utilized machines, precise, up-to-date equipment management is of strategic importance. The previous documentation system could no longer meet the professional requirements of modern equipment management: operating hours, idle times, fuel consumption, and maintenance status could only be determined with considerable effort—a risk to profitability, safety, and availability.

Geiger Technik und Service GmbH & Co. KG recognized early on that only a digital, centralized, and future-proof solution could meet the growing demands. The introduction of a modern GPS-based equipment management system was therefore a logical step toward sustainably increasing transparency and efficiency, professionalizing processes, and ensuring the high quality of the company’s services in the long term.

A Solution for Tomorrow’s Challenges

Geiger Technik und Service GmbH & Co. KG set out to find a digital, innovative telematics solution for equipment management. The company’s primary goals included GPS tracking, the digitization of paper-based processes, targeted investment and maintenance decisions, protection against loss and theft, sustainable resource management, optimized maintenance processes, and fuel consumption control.

Geiger Technik und Service GmbH & Co. KG found what it was looking for at A1 Digital. In cooperation with its technical solution partner Rosenberger Telematics, the digitalization expert offers a comprehensive, manufacturer-independent end-to-end telematics solution for the asset management of vehicles, construction machinery, and valuable assets. Customers receive telematics hardware, software, and applications (SaaS), cloud hosting, data connectivity, customer support, consulting, and access to additional digital solutions—all from a single source. In addition, standard interfaces ensure easy integration of master data from Geiger’s ERP systems.

A1 Digital’s Asset Management in Action

In A1 Digital’s asset management solution, GPS trackers and low-energy beacons enable on-site tracking and data collection. As of 2026, approximately 250 construction machines within the solution are equipped with GPS trackers, and roughly 200 attachments such as shovels, buckets, hydraulic breakers, or sweepers are fitted with beacons. In addition, approximately 200 smaller commercial vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons have been fitted with GPS trackers. The versatility of A1 Digital’s asset management solution also lies in the fact that it offers both the option to retrofitting machines and valuable assets with GPS trackers, as well as the option to integrate the telematics modules built into modern machines at the factory via appropriate interfaces (AEMP).

The Geiger Group derives a number of benefits from A1 Digital’s asset management solution:

  • Location and tracking: The GPS trackers in the larger equipment are used, among other things, for location and operational monitoring. This allows Geiger to simplify scheduling and optimize machine utilization. Geiger can track attachments and small equipment using energy-saving beacons that have their own power supply. This ensures that even small parts are included in the central directory and can be quickly located at any time. Furthermore, tracking both large and small equipment helps prevent loss and theft, as at least the last known location can be traced.
  • Digital handover logging: The system documents vehicle handover digitally and in an audit-proof manner, ensuring that all data, conditions, and damage are centrally available. This provides Geiger with efficiency, transparency, and traceability.
  • Data-driven analysis and decision-making: Machine and motion data—such as age, operating hours, utilization rate, downtime, and capacity utilization—are consolidated and analyzed in a BI tool. This provides an overview of investment needs and enables the optimization of machine deployment, facilitating informed decisions regarding replacement, sale, and equipment utilization.
  • Active, predictive maintenance management: The system acts as a historical vehicle record for each piece of equipment and offers predictive planning for maintenance needs, e.g., targeted notifications for the optimal time to change transmission fluid, ensuring that maintenance is performed on time. This minimizes downtime and reduces maintenance costs.
  • Performance reports and usage optimization: The system analyzes downtime, idle time, and the utilization of individual machines. Managers use the data obtained to optimize machine deployment, particularly to avoid unnecessary downtime or idle time and to reduce fuel consumption. The latter is becoming increasingly important in light of rising fuel prices. Geiger thus reduces operating and maintenance costs and ensures the economical use of equipment.
  • Decentralized use: The various business units can use the system independently and configure individual reports. This ensures scalability and high acceptance throughout the company.

Results that pay off

The device management solution from A1 Digital is already yielding tangible results for Geiger Technik und Service GmbH & Co. KG. Internal processes have been significantly streamlined, machines are being used more efficiently, and administrative overhead has been noticeably reduced.

In addition, Geiger now has a reliable, data-driven foundation for investment decisions. Thanks to easy access to all relevant usage and condition data, the company can now make much more informed assessments of when new machines should be purchased or leased.

As a result, the digital solution not only enhances operational efficiency but also improves strategic planning reliability and the future viability of the entire fleet.

Continuous Expansion

The current focus is on gradually making the solution available company-wide.

A key project is the completion of the machine master data. While new machines have already been fully entered with all relevant information, older equipment is also to be retroactively updated with their maintenance intervals and technical specifications. This involves the systematic entry of all attachments.

In addition, Geiger Technik und Service plans to integrate the growing commercial vehicle fleet—with a focus on trailers—even more closely into the digital solution and equip them with independent GPS tracking systems.

The plan is for the precise location data of all machines and attachments to be fed directly into the new Translogica transport management system from Geiger Logistik GmbH & Co. KG in the future. The real-time information creates a reliable basis for significantly more efficient and smarter handling of construction equipment transport.

With the introduction of the A1 system, Geiger Technik und Service GmbH & Co. KG is taking another step toward efficiency, transparency, and sustainable future viability.
